Tips for Packing Your Garage

The garage is a difficult area to pack for an upcoming move. If you’re like many other homeowners, you use it as a catch-all. Landscaping equipment, tools, and junk you don’t want in your house are dumped in the garage.

Fortunately, you can make the garage packing process easier, safer, and faster by following the tips below.

Pack the Garage First

Packing your garage for a move takes a lot of time and energy. You risk being too low on energy, time and motivation if you put off this task until much later. Pack your garage immediately after your residential move is confirmed. That will give you ample time for the difficult job ahead.

Sort through All Items

Take the time to sort through all your possessions in the garage. Divide the space into two large zones: one zone for the things you’re taking with you and the other one for things you won’t use. You can organize a garage sale for the unwanted items or donate them to charity.

Professional movers are forbidden from moving certain hazardous materials such as paint, paint thinners, fuels, oils, cleaning supplies, car batteries, propane tanks, and chemicals. Check with your moving company about the items they’re not allowed to transport for you.

Pick Up the Right Packing Materials

Pairing suitable, good quality packing materials with correct packing methods ensures your items remain safe during storage and moving. Many items in the garage are heavy and odd-shaped. Make sure you get the following materials:

• Sturdy, recyclable cardboard boxes of different sizes
• Rolls of biodegradable bubble wrap
• Packing paper
• Packing tape
• Moving blankets
• Color markers

Make sure you secure the bottoms of your moving boxes with multiple strips of packing tape before you start putting your belongings into them. Run the tape in both directions for added protection.

Pack Correctly

• Place small hand tools like pliers, screwdrivers, and hammers in your toolbox and lock it up.
• Carefully wrap the blades or edges of sharp-edged items with bubble wrap.
• Group garden tools with long handles such as rakes and shovels together and tie them into a tight bundle with rope or tape.
• Drain all the fuel off gas-operated equipment such as chainsaws and lawnmowers before you move them.
• Remove the detachable parts of power tools and put them in their original packages.
• Disassemble your bicycles as much as you can before your movers arrive. You can purchase original bike boxes to pack them in from a local bike shop.
• Remove cushions from outdoor furniture and pack them in large boxes. Dismantle the furniture when possible and stack chairs together.
• Remove the propane tank of your grill because it’s a non-transportable item. Dispose of the unused charcoal.
• Individually wrap small pottery or ceramic planters with a lot of cushioning. Consult your moving company if you intend to move large planters.
• The automobiles to be transported by your movers shouldn’t have more than one-quarter of fuel in their gas tanks. Make sure they don’t have any radiator fluid, oil or battery acid leaks. Drain all oil and fuel off the motor of your boats.

Keep a Marker Handy

As you pack your garage items, don’t forget to keep a marker handy. Label all the boxes with the contents inside them and the location where they’re going. Also, include special instructions such as “THIS SIDE UP” and “FRAGILE.”
