Many retirees relocate from winter weather states, like New York and Ohio, down to warmer weather states, like Florida and Arizona. However, maybe that’s not your style. Maybe you prefer to live in a cosmopolitan area, like Pittsburgh, PA or Austin, TX, to partake in culture (e.g. shows, museums, political groups, etc.).

Your best bet is to not get caught up in “best of” lists: instead, strive to understand your own parameters, needs and desires in a retirement destination.
One of the best ways to figure this out is to imagine a scenario in which you delegate your retirement process to somebody else. What rules would you tell that person about how to approach the retirement process? For instance, might say “don’t spend more than an x amount on a new home” or “make sure I live near my grandkids.” These imaginary instructions are your guiding principles for the out-of-state moving project; write them all down and refer to them as you weigh your options.
